HOLT SUPPORTS EXPANSION OF CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

President Obama Expected to Sign Bill As Early As Today

(Washington, DC) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement in support of legislation to extend and improve the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The bill passed the House with Holt’s support and now goes to the President for his signature. SCHIP is now expected to cover 11 million children. New Jersey uses its SCHIP funds to run a program called FamilyCare. Currently, 150,000 children and approximately 100,000 low-income parents are enrolled in New Jersey's program. An additional 116,000 New Jersey children who currently are uninsured would be covered because of this legislation.

“All American children deserve health care,” Holt said. “We have waited a long time to see this legislation signed into law. In that time, millions of families have faced new hardships in this economic crisis.  These families should not have to go the emergency room to ensure that their son or daughter receives the care they need.”
