HOLT STATEMENT ON POSSIBILITY NEW JERSEY WOULD DELAY PAPER BALLOT DEADLINE PAST NOVEMBER 2008 ELECTION

(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement in response to the passage, in the Assembly State Government Committee, legislation that would postpone the State of New Jersey’s deadline for implementation of its paper record requirement for voting systems to January 1, 2009. This was the first legislative step in the process to delay implementation.
"Not having a verifiable November election is simply unjustifiable since paper ballots accompanied by accessible ballot marking devices could easily be used, and the necessary equipment and procedures could be implemented at reasonable cost in the time remaining before November" Holt said. “New Jersey would be doing the right thing to implement a verifiable paper record. New Jersey voters shouldn’t have to leave their polling places wondering if their legitimate vote will be counted and the state should not have any unresolved and unresolvable questions the day after Election Day.”
