HOLT ANNOUNCES RECOVERY FUNDING TO PREVENT HOMELESSNESS IN CENTRAL NEW JERSEY

(Washington, DC) - U.S. Representative Rush Holt (NJ-12) today hailed the announcement from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that more than $3.8 million in America Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding is now available for Central New Jersey to help families avoid homelessness. An additional $10.2 million is provided for a statewide program. The funding comes from the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, designed to enable communities to provide short- and medium-term rental assistance and services to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless or to re-house and stabilize those who are homeless.
“Ensuring that our most vulnerable neighbors are spared the indignities of homelessness is a moral issue,” Holt said. “Yet, it is also an economic issue that will save taxpayers in the long run by minimizing the demand for shelters, for increased police patrols of neighborhoods in crisis, for emergency room services for people suffering from exposure, and a host of other consequences of increased homelessness.”
The funding includes:
Middlesex County - $800,475 Monmouth County - $1,240,040 Somerset County - $519,821 Trenton - $1,251,452
Funds from the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program will provide for a variety of assistance, including: short-term or medium-term rental assistance and housing relocation and stabilization services, including such activities as mediation, credit counseling, security or utility deposits, utility payments, moving cost assistance, and case management.
More information on the program can be found at hud.gov/recovery.
