HOLT SUPPORTS NEW LEGISLATION TO REAUTHORIZE STATE CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

Bipartisan bill still protects health coverage for more than 125,000 New Jersey children

(Washington, DC) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today supported new legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and provide health care for 10 million children, including more than 200,000 children in New Jersey. The new legislation would still strengthen SCHIP financing and increase health coverage for low-income, uninsured children whose parents do not qualify for Medicaid and can’t afford private insurance.

“I am pleased to support this important program and provide coverage to our nation’s and our state’s most vulnerable children,” Holt said. “The S-CHIP program is simply too crucial to so many families to allow it to lapse. A number of Republicans joined all but one Democrat to support this bill, and I hope more will join us if the President decides to veto this again.”

New Jersey’s FamilyCare program currently covers about 125,000 children through S-CHIP funding. Under this legislation, an additional 100,000 children would also be eligible to receive coverage. The bill would also strengthen the quality of health care low-income children receive.
