HOUSE APPROVES HOLT’S FUNDING REQUEST FOR JEWISH FEDERATION
OF GREATER MONMOUTH COUNTY RETIREMENT INITIATIVE,
BROOKDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE JOB TRAINING PROGRAM

FY 2008 Funding Bill, Also Containing Funding for Hunterdon
Medical Center, Still Needs President’s Signature

(Washington, D.C.) – The U.S. House of Representatives, with the support of Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12), last night passed the Fiscal Year 2008 Appropriations Bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, as well as Veterans Affairs and Military Construction. Among its provisions, the bill supports federal education initiatives like Head Start and Pell Grants, job training efforts, science and medical research, and veterans health care. Additionally, the bill contains Holt’s request to federally fund three projects in Central New Jersey.

The bill would direct $300,000 to the Jewish Federation of Greater Monmouth County’s Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities “Aging in Place” initiative; $250,000 to the Brookdale Community College Center for Excellent in Technology, Telecommunications and Economic Development for its workforce training program; and $90,000 to the Hunterdon Medical Center’s Lambertville Latino Healthcare Initiative. President Bush still must sign the funding legislation.

“The federal budget should reflect our priorities for the American people. In restoring funding for education, medical and science research, and veterans health care, this funding bill is one for which we can be proud,” Holt said. “I’m also pleased that this bill directs federal funding to important projects in my district. These are investments in our community and our nation, and I urge President Bush to sign this bill into law.”

The $300,000 for the Jewish Federation of Greater Monmouth County would allow the Federation to participate in a national Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) Aging in Place initiative. Older adults want to remain living in their homes and communities, even as they grow frail. This initiative, based on eight pilot programs located throughout New Jersey would promote the delivery of more cost-effective health and supportive services, greater cooperative health promotion, crises prevention, and community improvement initiatives.

The initiative would also develop new human, financial, and neighborhood resources for the benefit of older residents.  The initiative would benefit the Greenbriar neighborhood of Marlboro.

Holt also secured $250,000 for the Brookdale Community College to help it develop the Center for Excellence in Technology, Telecommunications and Economic Development to provide learning and training for incumbent, unemployed, and underemployed workers. The Center will also work with local teachers to strengthen their ability to teach math and science. The workforce near and at Fort Monmouth would also benefit from the technology training services at the Center.

Finally, the bill would provide $90,000 for the Hunterdon Medical Center to expand and enhance its Lambertville Latino Healthcare Initiative. The funding for the project will help it meet the healthcare needs of the growing healthcare needs of the growing Latino community, including coordinating care and pharmaceutical assistance and providing critical Spanish-language health and education materials and resources.
