HOLT STATEMENT ON YELLOWSTONE SNOWMOBILE DECISION

(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement in response to the decision by the National Park Service to permit 540 snowmobiles per day at Yellowstone. Last month, Holt and 85 other Members of Congress wrote National Park Service (NPS) Director Mary Bomar to voice their opposition to the proposal, arguing that it would allow increased air and noise pollution from snowmobiles and ignore recommendations to managers by the agency’s wildlife scientists to limit use. The full congressional letter is available at http://holt.house.gov/pdf/Yellowstone_letter.pdf

“In making this decision to implement policies detrimental to the conservation of Yellowstone, the National Park Service has ignored $10 million in taxpayer funded studies and the concerns of millions of Americans, seven former NPS Directors, a bipartisan group from Congress, and its own scientists. Yellowstone is more than just a national park. It is our nation’s first and most treasured national park. As the agency’s own studies have repeatedly demonstrated, the best way to preserve the park’s natural environment is to phase out the use of snowmobiles,” Holt said.
