(Washington, DC)—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week recognized SiGNa Chemistry, Inc. of Monmouth, NJ as one of five winners of the 2008 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award. SiGNa Chemistry will receive the award in the Small Business category for its research into a safe way to harness the reactivity of alkali metals. Last December, Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) secured $1.5 million in federal funding in the Fiscal Year 2008 budget to support SiGNa Chemistry’s research. Today, he congratulated SiGNa Chemistry for winning the award.
“The EPA is recognizing what I recognized last year: we need to invest in research and development of alternative energy sources if we are to lessen our dependence on foreign fuels and slow the rate of global climate change,” Holt said. “I thank SiGNa Chemistry for the good work it is doing in Central New Jersey, and look forward to monitoring the research they are pursuing.”
In addition to their contribution to hydrogen fuel research, SiGNa Chemistry’s developments can be expected to aid the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and general synthesis industries, accelerating drug discovery and manufacturing while bolstering worker safety.
This is the thirteenth year the EPA has presented these awards, which promote research and development to reduce or eliminate waste, particularly hazardous waste, in industrial production.
More information on the award and a description of SiGNa Chemistry’s research can be found here.
