(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today released the following statement in support of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, legislation that responds to the Ledbetter v. Goodyear ruling of the Supreme Court, which fundamentally weakened fair pay and employment protections that employees have enjoyed for over 40 years since passage of the Civil Rights Act.
“The Supreme Court’s ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear would set a disturbing precedent, that employees are only entitled to protection from wage discrimination if they can discover that they are being treated unfairly and take legal action to correct it within 180 days. Passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act will clarify that each act of discrimination – each paycheck – is unacceptable and legally actionable.”
“Every employee deserves to be confident that the employer is treating them fairly. The federal government should be protecting the rights of employees to be paid equally for equal work. The Supreme Court should not be searching for ways to protect corporations from being held accountable for discriminatory practices.”
