(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12), himself a professional physicist most of his career, today issued the following statement on President-Elect Barack Obama’s expected nomination on Saturday of John Holdren, a Harvard physicist, as his science advisory and the nomination of Oregon State University marine biologist Jane Lubchenco as head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
“In appointing John Holdren to serve as presidential science advisor and Jane Lubchenco as head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, President-Elect Obama will affirm that science and reason will be valued in the White House. Those who want our nation to take real steps to address climate change and bolster innovation infrastructure are thrilled with this news.
John Holdren is the best person I can imagine for this job. I have worked with Dr. Holdren for two decades on a variety of issues, most recently at a roundtable I hosted with Speaker Pelosi Monday in Princeton, where we committed to invest in the physical sciences and energy research that will ensure our nation’s leadership in the 21st century.
Those who know Jane Lubchenco know she is a most highly respected research scientist and a long-time leader in bringing science to policymakers and the public. I expect her to be an outstanding leader at the helm of NOAA.”
